Counting Down the Days The Huskers begin play for the Scott Frost era in less than 2 months … when they host the pesky and difficult Akron Zips. There has been, and will be, a LOT happening in Lincoln as players prepare for the Frost era. It sounds like the team is focused on strength and conditioning and on being committed to each other!

The Big Red Spring Fling was a BLAST! The course at Shangri-La was gorgeous and players had a great time fighting for the awards! We have pictures posted on our Facebook page.

Watch Parties. Times for the first few games have been announced and the second page shows our schedule as we know it today. We will host Tulsa Area Watch Parties at Mulligan’s inside the Tulsa Wyndham hotel. The Oklahoma City Area Watch Parties will be at 1907 Burgers and Brews in Moore, just west of I-35.

Tailgate Party. Our annual poolside Tailgate Party will be held just before the Colorado game on September 8. Click here for all the details.

Christmas Party. Given the heat and humidity we’ve been experiencing, let’s think about the OCC Annual Christmas Party on Friday, December 14 at the Tulsa Wyndham Resort. We will have another outstanding guest speaker with insight into the inner workings of the Huskers!

Membership. As of July 1, we have 98 paid members. Thank you! You have helped fund the club activities for the first half of the year. If you have not yet renewed, please consider this a personal request to use the attached application, or the online application and payment before July 31st.

Thoughts on the Spring Game

Here are a few of my thoughts and observations as seen from the West Stadium 20-yard line. David and April Laudenklos sat behind us and we shared our thoughts throughout the game.

There was a LOT of excitement in the stands and on the field! The players were pumped up!

The Spring Game record crowd of 86,818 was loud in the first half. More subdued in the second half. The cool weather and light drizzle may have had something to do with that. The concessions ran out of Runzas throughout the stadium before halftime … and there was a lot of grumbling about that! 😊 Not all the fans in the stands lasted through the second half.

The play calling on both sides of the ball was kept pretty vanilla … simple plays, not opening the whole playbook for opponents to see.

The intent was for the coaches to watch players perform, how players execute the plays both offensively and defensively. And to show off a little in front of the fans. Coach Frost waved the officials off a couple of the “touch tackles” on the QBs when they made great runs or passes. A couple resulted in TDs!

There were some plays called to intentionally feature players that the fan base wanted to see in action … QBs, RBs, Receivers; O-line, D-line, D-Backs, etc. There were some nice pass plays, strong running inside and outside the tackles, and some excitement at having QBs who can run the ball!

Of the QBs, most people agreed Adrian Martinez looked the best, and was certainly the most exciting. Tristan Gebbia looked good also. Andrew Bunch and Noah Vedral looked a little nervous and unsure at times.

There were several low snaps and that caused the QB to bobble the ball. Most likely just a matter of time and repetition through the depth list of Centers will resolve that issue.

There were some good performances. The O-line looked stronger and quicker. Better blocking. The D-line also looked better … several times they were getting a good push and disrupting plays. Lots of hands in the air and passes being knocked down. The tackling looked to be improving … keeping in mind that this was a scrimmage and the idea was not to injure teammates … the flow to the ball looked better, and the tackling form looked better. Satisfied? No. There is still work to be done! And they will get there!

There is a new sense of pride and hope for the program. Coach Frost mentioned time and again the desire to return to the process and traditions that won national championships, while at the same time, introducing a speed and style of play that … quite frankly … from the stands it looked exhausting. Snapping the ball on offense within 15 seconds of the play clock being reset. This is going to wear down opposing defenses. And the defensive plays and adjustments were also being made at a much more rapid pace!

Now that Spring Practices have concluded, and the coaches contact with players is limited until August, it will be up to the Strength and Conditioning coaches and the Nutrition staff … and each individual player … to continue their commitment to return to glory.

It took time for the program to slip to the level we saw at the end of 2017. Not a year. Decades actually. It will take time to return to where we expect the team to be. Not decades … but two or three years at least. As fans, it is our job to be supportive and encouraging. That article from Steve Sipple really says a lot.

We had a great time in Lincoln and are encouraged by everything we see! The opening game cannot get here soon enough! Go B1G RED!

As always, Go B1G RED!

5/9/2017 - OCC Members:

Our OCC Founder, Don Nelson, attended the Spring Game in Lincoln and prepared a Scouting Report to help prime the pump and get everyone excited for the upcoming season!

My spies in Lincoln also tell me they saw Don meeting with Coach Riley and Coach Diaco and diagramming a few new plays for the offense and defense. So if you hear the Huskers audible on either side of the ball, and they use the word “Oklahoma!” you will know they are running Don’s plays! J

Nelson’s Notes:

Linda and I were very interested in this year’s Husker Spring Game and Coaches Luncheon. There were a lot of questions to be answered by the coaches and the players in this Spring Game!  For the last three years we have played one Quarterback, Tommy Armstrong, with very little backup talent. Which last year resulted in winning the first 9 games, then Tommy got hurt and we lost the last 4 games.

The 2017 Husker Team has a total new look!  We have 2 Quarterbacks competing for the starting job. They are: #12 Patrick O'Brien 6'4" 230 RFr.; and #13 Tanner Lee 6'4' 220 Jr. transfer from Tulane. And close behind them at Quarterback are #14 Tristan Gebbia 6'3" 180 Fr.; and #16 Andrew Bunch 6'1 200 So. These 4 Quarterbacks threw 95 total passes for 702 yards with a completion rate of 65.2%.

It looks like Tanner Lee could be our starting Quarterback this fall!

Another great addition to our Coaching staff is Defensive Coordinator Bob Diaco. Coach Diaco comes to Nebraska after many years as Defensive Coordinator at Notre Dame.  He has a lot of energy and the players really like him. Coach Diaco elected not to show his new 3-4 defensive line strategy in the Spring Game!  I think that line up will be awesome and will give our opponents a lot of grief!!
